For example, the bosonic alkaline-earth isotopes have zero nuclear spin which eliminates many of the complexities present in alkali Rydberg studies permitting simpler and more direct comparison between theory and experiment. The presence of two valence electrons allows the production of singlet and triplet Rydberg states that can exhibit a variety of attractive or repulsive interactions. The availability of weak intercombination lines is advantageous for laser cooling and for applications such as Rydberg dressing. Excitation of one electron to a Rydberg state leaves behind an optically-active core ion allowing, for high-L states, the optical imaging of Rydberg atoms and their (spatial) manipulation using light scattering. The second valence electron also opens up the possibility of engineering long-lived doubly-excited states such as planetary atoms. Recent advances in both theory and experiment are highlighted together with a number of possible directions for the future.

Ionization due to the interaction between two Rydberg atoms
Using a classical trajectory Monte Carlo method, we have computed the ionization resulting from the interaction between two cold Rydberg atoms. We focus on the products resulting from close interaction between two highly excited atoms. We give information on the distribution of ejected electron energies, the distribution of internal atom energies and the velocity distribution of the atoms and i...

A fascinating aspect of Rydberg atoms is their ability to form huge but very weakly bound molecules with a ground state atom, only held together by a scattering process between the latter and the Rydberg electron. Beyond the usual way of creating such molecules by laser excitation from two ground state atoms with a distance of less than the Rydberg radius, we demonstrate that Rydberg molecules ...
متن کاملEffects of imperfect unipolarity on the ionization of Rydberg atoms by subpicosecond half-cycle pulses.
In recent experiments [1,2], Rydberg atoms have been exposed to ultrashort, electric-field pulses. The electric field in these pulses is nearly unipolar, and has a temporal shape which resembles one-half of a cycle of THz-band radiation [3]. In the experiments [1,2], the 0.5-psec dura tion of these "half-cycle pulses" (HCPs), 1"HCP' is shorter than or comparable to the classical Kepler period ...
متن کاملMagnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms
Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...
متن کاملRydberg atom mediated polar molecule interactions: a tool for molecular-state conditional quantum gates and individual addressability.
We study the possibility to use interaction between a polar molecule in the ground electronic and vibrational state and a Rydberg atom to construct two-qubit gates between molecular qubits and to coherently control molecular states. A polar molecule within the electron orbit in a Rydberg atom can either shift the Rydberg state, or form a Rydberg molecule. Both the atomic shift and the Rydberg m...
